Murren Switzerland

Murren is a small alpine village in Bern canton, south-central Switzerland. It is situated above the Lauterbrunnen village. The elevation of Murren Village is 5374 ft (1638 meters) above sea level. It is called the land of outdoor adventures. Places like Murren are hard to find where you can have alpine scenery, mountain culture, and thrilling activities. This beautiful small village is very peaceful and charming. The weather in Murren in summer is mild and winters in Murren are cold and snowy. Normally we see pictures of Murren on Instagram that look charming, but today we’re going to take a look at the famous places in Murren.

Murren Village

Murren Village Switzerland is completely cut off from traffic, making it different from others. It is the highest inhabited settlement in Bern above 1650 meters, high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Murren Switzerland is the best place for people who want to enjoy the natural beauty of Switzerland. In 1891 a cable opened for tourists which started from Lauterbrunnen to Murren. Murren is also popular for skiing. It has the highest-altitude ski resort in Bernese Oberland. There are many things you can do in Murren. 

Places to visit in Murren Suiza

Schilthorn: 

Schilthorn is a 2,970m (9744 feet) high mountain making it one of the highest peaks in Switzerland. It is located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. It is completely covered in white snow. When sunlight falls on it, it gives a completely different view. The color of snow becomes golden and this view looks stunning. From Schilthorn you can view other mountains like the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. Moreover, It has the World’s first revolving restaurant, Piz Gloria, at the summit. It is also famous for being a filming location for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). A steel-and-glass pathway clings to the cliff edge at Birg station, offering an adrenaline-pumping experience.

Mount Schilthorn in Murren

Piz Gloria is the most famous revolving restaurant at the summit of Schilthorn, in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. Since Piz Gloria sits at a height of 2970 meters (9744 feet), it attracts visitors for its breathtaking views and entertaining connection to James Bond. Piz Gloria revolves every 45 minutes and thus gives outstanding views of all the alpine peaks and valleys around it. While at Piz Gloria, guests eat Swiss food with an international flair, often picking up some elements from the James Bond theme.

Via Ferrata Murren

The Via Ferrata, situated in Mürren, is a thrill for one who has a sense of adventure. From here, one glimpses the majestic Swiss Alps. The trek proceeds from Mürren to Gimmelwald, twisting towards the north and northwest over 2.2 km, climbing up, and hiking down the mountain face. Also included on the trail is a suspension bridge crossing the deep valley below 80 meters. At times, one might also get to try the Tyrolean Traverse- almost like a zip line. 

North Face Trail

The North Face Trail in Murren is a popular trail for hiking. It offers stunning views of the iconic north faces of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains. It is an excellent choice for hikers looking to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Bernese Oberland region. Its length is approximately 6.5 Km and it takes 2 to 3 hours to complete the track. Its difficulty level is easy to moderate suitable for families and casual hikers. It starts from the Murren village and Allmendhubel Funicular Station.

Along the route, hikers are treated to breathtaking vistas of the north faces of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, as well as other peaks like the Breithorn and Gspaltenhorn. Also, the trail features informational panels about the mountains, local wildlife, geology, and alpine culture. During the summer months, colorful alpine wildflowers adorn the trail, adding to its charm. Hikers pass through traditional Swiss pastures with wooden chalets, cows grazing, and occasional mountain huts where local cheese and refreshments are available.

Mountain View Trail

The mountain view trails high above Lauterbrunnen Valley. This beautiful trail traverses the mountain with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. It starts from the top of Grutschalp Cable Car. The path ascends as it wanders through forests and alpine meadows. The trail ends at Allmendhubel, where you’ll find a restaurant, an alpine garden, and a big Flower Park playground. If you are hiking with kids, the playground is good motivation to keep walking. For an easier hike, just walk in the opposite direction, which is mostly downhill.

This hike is good for those on a budget as the mountain railways are much less expensive than others in the Jungfrau Region.

Winter sports in Murren

Winter sports in Murren are at the top. There are three famous winter sports in Murren. 

Skiing 

Skiing is a famous sport in Murren. There are three famous ski spots in Murren from which you can choose. The main one is Murren Schilthorn and the others are Kleine Scheidegg-Mannlichen and Grindelwald. There are more than 45 cable cars and lifts and approx. 220 km of downhill ski slopes. It is connected to other resorts like Wengel and Grindelwald which creates a vast ski network. The area for ski and snowboarding runs is about 53 km. The resorts are some of the most beautiful places in Switzerland to ride the slopes. Murren has some of the modern and best lifts in Switzerland. These include chair lifts, cable cars, and schilthornbahn, these can take you up to the top in no time. 

Sledding 

Sledding is an exhilarating winter activity in Murren. It has a cozy atmosphere and great sledding activities. The sledding route starts from Allmendhubel to Murren, which is suitable for everyone including beginners. You can enjoy the beauty of Murren while sledding. If you have a long plan for sledding for 2 to more days then you should buy Jungfrau Region Hiking and Sledging Pass. However, you can also buy individual tickets for the Allmendhubel funicular railway car or Schiltgrat Chairlift. A sledding and fond-du event is held on Allmendhubel every Thursday and Friday evening from January to mid-March.

You can also get food and drinks there and have a lot of fun on a thrilling ride back to Murren. Before going for sledding just make sure you complete all safety precautions. You should wear waterproof shoes, warm and waterproof clothes, gloves and a hat. I also recommend you wear a helmet. No sled? No problem! You can also rent a sled from sports shops nearby for a small fee. Skis, helmets, snowboards, and boots can also be rented from the shops. 

Ice Skating 

Ice skating is a popular activity in Murren Switzerland. Surrounded by the stunning peaks of the Bernese Oberland, it is a magical experience. Murren has an open-air ice rink that provides an authentic alpine experience. It offers a breathtaking of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The rink is suitable for both casual skating and ice hockey. It is well-maintained, making it ideal for families and groups. The good thing is that skates are available there at rent so no need to worry about them. Also, some nearby hotels and lodges offer packages that include skating access. The ice skating season typically runs from late December to early March, depending on weather conditions. Operating hours may vary, but evening skating sessions are enchanting under the starry sky.

How to reach Mount Schilthorn? 

There are two ways you can reach Mount Schilthorn. 

Cable Car 

The peak of Mount Schilthorn can be accessed by gondola. Two stages to Schilthorn: first from Murren to Birg, running time about 10 minutes each way, Olympics cable car rides up to 8,783 feet, up at 2,677 meters. From Birg you will have to take another gondola up to the last spot to Schilthorn Summit. The cable car service between Murren and Schilthorn runs every half-hour. From the cable car, you have a 360-degree view that includes breathtaking sights of the Murren Alps and the alpine scenery, including the peaks of Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. You can also purchase tickets from the Murren cable car station online or by phone. Alpine passes and Swiss Travel Pass holders may receive a discount on gondola fares. 

Hiking 

If you are looking for an adventurous experience, you can hike to reach the summit. However, it’s a challenging and steep trek which is only recommended for experienced hikers. It’s a long trail and it takes about 3 to 4 hours. You can start from Murren Swiss and hike to Birg. It takes about 2 to 3 hours. From Birg you can hike up to Schilthorn. It is a steep hike and can take another 1.5 to 2 hours.

You can enjoy Murren weather while hiking. Total hiking time is approximately 4 to 5 hours. You can also combine the two methods. First, you can hike to Birg and then take a cable car from Birg to the Schilthorn summit. One thing to remember is that you cannot reach the top by car. There is no way to reach by car. However, you can park your car in the parking lot of Murren Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Murren is a peaceful place like Bergen in Norway.
